Asher Chronicles : the Asher mess

just last week....

I went to brush my teeth, he pushed the chair up to the kitchen counter, climbed up, opened a cabinet, got out the honey, got back down and proceeded to pour it out. all of it out. onto the floor and onto himself.

I was hanging a shelf in my bedroom and he was watching Elmo in the living room, next thing I know he is in my room holding the chocolate syrup bottle upside down. I retrace his steps and there are puddles and streams of chocolate syrup from in front of the fridge, into the living room, in the hallway, and into my room. thus far, this has been one of the very worst to clean up and my carpet is still stained.

I was feeding Kennedy to sleep and he and Josh were watching tv. I walk into the kitchen and he had poured out the entire jar of relish onto the kitchen floor.

I think I was feeding Kennedy again and forgot to lock the fridge; he opened the fridge and got out the syrup. he poured out a bottle of syrup onto the kitchen floor and was "skating" around the kitchen.

I went to the bathroom soon after making breakfast and he starting cracking eggs into the base of the blender and on the counter.

o that black eye? nobody really knows how he got it.
so if you ever wonder why my house looks they way it does, it's because I spend all my free time cleaning up "Asher messes" ... and one might think, I should just learn how to put things away better, but there are two other little people in this house who always need me and sometimes I just need to use the bathroom! Also, just bring Asher to your house for an hour or two and he will quickly expose all your weaknesses.

Asher Chronicles

people keep telling me I need to write it down so that I don't forget...
well, here I am, writing it down...

my asher, my asher.
all the trouble in the world is wrapped up in my little Asher.
but then he looks up at you with those big brown eyes and you just want to kiss his squishy, wonderful cheeks...

he's like most boys. he climbs. for about a year, he climbed on to the top of the table EVERY.CHANCE.POSSIBLE. i think he only fell off once or twice. he also loves to climb onto the kitchen counter, the kid table in the living room, the dresser in his room, the entry table, on top of every stool and chair in sight... maybe one day he will climb mountains {figuratively or literally}

but we will start these "chronicles" with a classic "it's just too quiet"

Asher was still pretty young, and I was not quite as savvy in my "Asher-proofing."
I was upstairs getting ready for the day and they boys were downstairs playing, when I thought to myself, "They are either playing really well together- how nice! Or they are into trouble- I better go find out!" So I walk down the stairs, turn the corner into the office: Joshua is standing over Asher's head pouring black crafting paint on to his head... I look around there is paint in the carpet, on the walls, on the furniture. I walk in to their room next door, there is paint on the crib, more paint on the floor. And then poor Asher, he is literally covered in black paint.
I don't know what to say, I just pick Asher up, tell Josh to follow and into the bath they go.
There.Was.So.Much.Paint.
But thank you internet, Hand Sanitizer gets acrylic paint out and off of most things.
Lots of scrubbing later and the paint was gone.
This was just a glimpse into my life with two small boys...

Asher Gray: 2 years

Asher Gray,
My crazy boy. You are two years old now. I honestly don't even know where to start... All the ways you make me crazy... All the ways you kill me with your cuteness... All the ways I don't understand you... All the ways we absolutely adore you... All the ways we are so thankful you are ours!

Since about 11 months old, you have been "tough." You are CONSTANTLY going, CONSTANTLY getting into trouble, CONSTANTLY moving. You never stop, never slow down, never give us a break. You don't care about shows, but will appreciate Elmo for about 3 minutes. You spend about 3 minutes of every hour playing quietly by yourself... In those moments, I am in awe of your little {BIG} personality and the boy you are growing up to be. And then the other 57 minutes of every hour, you are moving from thing to the next, pulling things down, pulling things out, running things over, tripping over other things, running, jumping, never stopping... In those moments, I wonder how I survive and how I will keep up. You aren't necessary "coordinated" and seem to have very little awareness of your body but you are TOUGH. You fall down a lot, but you just keep on going. You are kind of like a tank that just rolls over everything in it's path bringing lots of destruction but hardly takes notice.

Since before Kennedy came, you moved downstairs with Joshua. He sleeps in a twin bed & you sleep in a crib. About 2 weeks after Kennedy was born you figured out how to climb out of that crib. And pretty much, every night, for the past 3 months you have climbed out of that crib, gotten in trouble, been put back to bed, then climbed right back out, and repeated that cycle about 7 times a night. Some nights are better than others and sometimes you are better when your daddy is home, but 75% of the time you climb out, you climb out, you climb out. You really don't care about that "getting into trouble" discipline thing, you just keep climbing out until your brother is fast asleep and you are too tired to do it once more.... One day, we'll look back at this time and laugh...

Another "tough" part of this past year has been all the sickness you have dealt with. It really just breaks my heart. You got more colds, more fevers, more time throwing up, more bad coughs, more diaper rashes, more ear infections, more YUCK than I would ever wish on anyone. One thing we did figure out was that you are most likely allergic to soy and/or diary. After way too much diarrhea, a dear friend suggested the allergy. One day of no dairy or soy in your diet and the diarrhea was gone! Praise the Lord! It has been a little difficult to change your diet but you are honestly a much less picky eater now & I think it has improved your behavior as well. Here's to praying that the next year of your life is FAR less sick!

You & your brother find lots of trouble together... especially while I am nursing your little sister. When you were first born and Josh sat at my feet throwing fits because I wasn't playing with him, I said to myself, "You won't ever have to do this again, because next time you are nursing a baby Josh & Asher will have each other..." Well, that has proved true - you have each other to get into the pantry, pull out the craisins, and dump them all over the floor, you have each other to put toilet paper roll after toilet paper roll into the toilet, you have each other to hit and make cry while I can do nothing about it, and every once in a while you have each other to play with. Now, I have learned a thing or two - I *almost* always shut/lock every door to every room, I've put a lock on the fridge, a a gate on the pantry, and I *almost* always put away all the food on the counter, but somehow you two seem find plenty to get into no matter what I do. So each and every day I am reminded of my desperate need for Jesus... His patience, His grace, and those new mercies each and every day.

At two years old, some things I don't want to forget about my Asher-man:
  • how you say "I sit right here"
  • the way you make your sister smile & giggle
  • your sweet, sweet cuddles
  • how if anyone is doing anywhere or doing anything it is always "SHOPPIN"
  • how you always, always, always want to help me cook in the kitchen
  • your laugh
  • that you call firetrucks, police cars, and ambulances "wee-O-wee-O's"
  • how you say "ella. ella. ella." & always want to talk to her or facetime her
  •  your fearless attitude
  • how often you copy  your brother exactly
  • your high pitched voice when you are repeating me

At two years old, some of your favorite things:
  • your blankie/ dee-dee
  • blueberries, sausage & eggs, fries, almond milk, and juice
  • playing cars
  • being outside with your brother
  • cuddling & being held by your momma all.the.time.
  • helping in the kitchen
  • going to play at the y
  • playing "rescue bots"
  • the choo-choo in our front yard
  • reading (by yourself & with others)
  • Blitzy - one of your first real words
  • tacos for dinner - what you picked for your birthday dinner
  • anything sweet
  • your Opa
One your actual birthday this year we had a taco dinner at our house with Daddy, Joshie, Kennedy, Kma, Opa & Uncle Johnny. We had coconut ice cream and homemade cookies for dessert. We celebrated the next Saturday at the park near our house with lots of friends & family. We were supposed to get sub sandwiches, but Momma kinda forgot & Daddy had to order pizza :) You loved playing at the park and being with all your friends and cousins.
Asher Gray, you drive us crazy and we love you SO much! I can't wait to see what this never stops, never gives in, pretty stubborn, quiet but sure, FUNNY personality brings as you grow. You keep us on our toes and keep us laughing every day. I love hearing more and more of what you have to say. I can't wait to see how your relationship with your siblings continues to grow. You are an amazing little guy! we love you more and more everyday!
love, your momma & daddy

Asher Gray: 12 months, 1 year!

Asher man,
1 year! We've been a family of 4 for 1 whole year & I don't think it could be more perfect! You are pretty much wonderful. You still love kisses & cuddles and are getting quite the sense of humor. You spend a lot of time in a "bear crawl" and move fast! You finally figured out how to go down the stairs the safe way & I'm pretty sure you are just excited to get to play in Joshua's room more :) You still are kind of funny with food but love mac n' cheese & very recently figured out you like fruit! I would say your favorite though is milk :)

For the first time since you were born, this month I have said Joshua is a little easier than you are. You are in stage of getting into EVERYTHING! We can't leave you alone for more than two seconds before you are climbing the rocking chair, pulling the books down, playing in the toilet {ok, this has only happened like twice ;)}, or pulling everything out of the cabinets. You also are in a "I want Momma only" stage. So these are my options- carry you around every where I go, get nothing done while playing with you on the floor, or let you be & clean up the massive mess that will certainly ensue. You're keeping me on my toes, that's for sure!
You now say "HI." It's pretty great. This month you just started talking a lot more. It's almost surprising when you start babbling because you have been quite for so long. But I love hearing you talk & learning more about this silly personality you're growing into! You are also incredibly tough. Nothing seems to phase you & you get tortured pretty often from you big brother, but you take it like a champ and hardly ever cry.
Your favorite toys are any trucks you can crawl/push around. You love standing up on everything including the walls. You are friendly & happy. You've always got a smile to share and really only get cranky when you are tired or hungry.
This month we went on our first big family vacation to the beach! You were very apprehensive at first but by the last day you crawled up to the water all by yourself and were happy as a clam splashing, playing in the muddy sand, and letting the water crash up on you.  Goodness, I love that belly & those cheeks!
For you BIRTHDAY, we had a big BBQ at our house on your actual birthday! It was rainy and chilly so there were approximately 50 people squished inside our house- lots of people love you my boy! You were a little overwhelmed with all the people, a little tired because the thunderstorm woke you up, and in typical Asher fashion very apprehensive about the cake! I actually don't think you at any cake. You just played with it!
Asher, we are so in love you! You bring this family so much JOY & LOVE.
Your daddy & I just keep saying you truly are a HAPPY BLESSING {the meaning of your name}!
we love you more & more everyday!
love,
your momma & daddy

Asher Gray: 10 months

 Hey Big Boy,
10 months. That seems far too old. You are just a BABY. You say- No way mom! I can crawl everywhere, pull up on everything, & I have 4 teeth now! This month, you officially moved from 3 naps to 2. You gained 3 new teeth, 1 on the bottom & the 2 upper "lateral incisors" and the upper middle left is not far behind! You're starting to eat more (kind of). You really like anything made with white flour. Really awesome... Not so much for this food controlling mother... God is telling me to GIVE.IT.UP! So I'm working on that & you eat lots of bread, sweet potatoes, and instant oatmeal. The weather is warming up some & then it snows a lot. But every chance we get we play outside or go for a walk. You like the swings at the park and are always content on a walk. Your brother is still the coolest dude around in your eyes. Now that you can crawl to his toys and cup we are working on sharing and speaking in a kind voice (for Josh), but we are all learning :)

I love seeing what intrigues you- usually paper & balls. You also can play with a toy car like a big, big boy. You love sleeping with your blankie & only suck your thumb when going to sleep. Unfortunately, you got your first major sickness- a double ear infection. The running nose and a cough are still kind of lingering and I would be very happy if they went away sometime soon! But you are so happy most of the time no one would ever know you were sick.
You are a joy. You love to hang upside down and giggle. You think Blitz is very interesting. You fit on my hip like you were made to sit there. You kind of say dada and when you are sad kind of say mama. But I'm not calling any first words just yet. You sleep every night 6:45pm to 7:30am. Your hair is getting longer and you love pulling off your socks. Sometimes you do the funniest things and we all just think, I can't wait to see what this kid is like!
Asher, we love you way too much!
love always, your momma & daddy

Asher Gray: 9 months

Asher man,
It's hard to believe in 3 short months you will be 1 year old.
I have held you in my arms just as many days as I held you in my belly!
You, my son, are just wonderful. You are cuddly and sweet, o-so chubby, and just plain happy most of the time. You only get fussy right before bed. You sleep & nap like a champion. Your chubby cheeks and double chin are loved by all. On your 9 month Age & Stages Questionnaire (from the doctor) you scored worst in Communication (you're pretty quiet most of the time) and best in Problem-Solving. I'm really looking forward to seeing how that plays out as you get older...
You started crawling this month! It has pretty much turned my world upside down. You are on the move & independent. First chance you get, you head straight to the bathroom and Joshua's froggy potty. You pull down books off the bookshelf and love trying to figure out everything in the bottom of the panty.
You can pull up now, onto your knees. You got your first tooth (bottom, middle right)!  You LOVE taking baths. You still hate food. It's pretty much a major stressor, but I'm trying to rest in the fact that you will EVENTUALLY want to eat something besides sweet potatoes and cheerios.

This month you went on the Alethia Youth Winter Retreat. You were such a perfect baby & were fawned over by millions of middle school girls ;)
 9 month stats:
Clothing Size - 18 months
Diaper Size - 4
Height - 31 inches - 100percentile
Weight - 22.5 lbs - 88percentile
Head Circumference - 18.5 inches - 93percentile
Asher, you are straight up blessing to everyone in this house, everyone you share a cuddle with, or flash that great grin to. I'm praying you continue to share your joy and love with everyone around you. I pray you use that stubborn streak to be stubborn for the righteousness of Chris. I pray you start eating more solid food soon. I pray you always want to cuddle with your mom & that your brother always makes you laugh.
we love you more and more everyday!
love your momma & daddy

Asher Gray: 8 months

 My big boy!
I can't believe you are 8 months old, wearing 12 month clothes, and about to crawl.
The pajamas you are wearing in the picture below- your brother wore at 18 months. That's crazy!

Speaking of your brother, you think he's pretty great. He makes you laugh, gives you snacks (behind my back), brings you toys, and is always checking up on you. I love seeing your little relationship blossom & can't wait to see your friendship grow!

You are now a pro at rolling around and getting what/where you want.
You can get up on your knees and rock back & forth, but no crawling yet.

 You are funny.
You like to laugh & are very ticklish.
Story for the photo below- We had been out running errands. I thought you would fall asleep on the way home so I put your cover over your car seat. We stopped to get some gas. I got back in the car and you had pulled the car seat shad and canopy down and were peeking out at me & giggling! Too funny!

I love that grin!

You're back to sleeping through the night no problems!
You still nap three times a day and eat 5-7oz about 5 times a day.
You still HATE real food.

You are a joy & such a treasure.

We love you more and more everyday!
love, your momma & daddy

Asher Gray: 7 months

 Asher Gray,
Happy 7 months! My sweet boy. Not much has changed. You're still chubby & kissable, sweet & cuddly, ticklish & smiley. You're content but like to be held when it's almost sleepy time. You're grin is contagious. This month was your first Christmas! You are beginning to recognize those you love & LOVE to stare at your daddy! Your brother makes you laugh and you cuddle with anyone and everyone who is willing. You are still sucking your thumb, especially when you are sleepy. But you are not a fan of sleeping anywhere besides your crib, no matter how tired you are. Unfortunately, you got another nasty cold right after Christmas. It made for a few cranky days and some extra feedings in the middle of the night but most of the time you were just as smiley and never complained too much. Towards the end of this month, I seem to have lost some of my milk... Right now I am exclusive pumping and supplementing with formula. It seems to be what you need so we will keep that up as long as we can.

This month was your first time in the big swing- loved it!
Your first time in the big seat in the grocery cart (at Costco)- liked sitting next to your brother.

You can sit up totally unsupported.
You are not really caring about trying to crawl.
Towards the end of this month you finally started to roll around with more determination.

7 month stats:
Clothes- 12 months
Diapers- size 3
Teeth- none

This month we started solid food. Around 6 months, 3 weeks.
I knew you weren't quite ready, so I held off a couple weeks.
But you pretty hate food. You turn your head to the side and refuse to open your mouth.
I've tried everything in the book-
sweet potatoes, green beans, peas, bananas, oatmeal cereal, applesauce
chunky, pureed, from a jar, on a spoon, from my finger, just let you play
you want NOTHING to do with it.
Kind of driving me crazy but we'll just keep trying...

Your schedule is still pretty much the same.
Lately you've been liking to get up between 5 and 6:30am, eat and go back to sleep till 8 or later.
Not my favorite, but it's fine... You go sleep at 7pm, so I can't complain!

I love seeing more and more of your personality. Seeing what interests you and what makes you laugh. I love that you love to cuddle.Your sleepy, sucking my thumb cuteness is the best. You are wearing clothes your brother wore when he was one and walking- that is crazy to me!
You are my sweet Asher man.

We love you more and more everyday!
love, your momma & daddy
